Stump the Pastor III: Pretty Prairie

Q: Is cremation OK?

A: The Bible has nothing to say about cremation. Most of our traditions concerning death, funerals and burial are cultural preferences. Since the Bible has nothing to say about cremation, I come down on the side that cremation is OK. In fact, my preference is that I would be cremated at my death.

The best argument from Christians against cremation is that it is somehow a violation of the "temple" of God. This belief is that the body is created by God, and should only be destroyed by God. They hold that our bodies need to be in tact at the time of the second coming of Christ. My response to this is that if God can cause dead tissue to come to life, putting the tissue together should not be a problem for him.

Q: Are there animals in heaven?

A: Again, I don't believe the Bible has anything to say on this issue. There is no reason to believe that there will or will not be animals in heaven. I think that many people have hoped this were true as a way of finding comfort at the passing of a favorite pet. My hunch is that when we get to heaven we will be so consumed with spending time with Jesus and the glory of it all that we will not think about, or even miss our pets.

Q: What is your view on capital punishment?

A: I try to be a pro-life person in every aspect of my life. This means that I am opposed to abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, "pulling the plug" and capital punishment. When we put a person to death we are essentially condemning him to hell. I do not want to be responsible for that. As long as a person is alive there is is chance, no matter how slim, that he will will repent and turn to Christ. When he is dead he can no longer do that.
