What do we need if we really want to hear from God?
- Sometimes we need to be overwhelmed and discouraged. (v. 10) I want to be the last person to suggest that it is good to be depressed. I have spent my share of time in a depressive state. Being depressed is not always a good thing, but sometimes it leads us to God. We turn to the Lord when we feel like there is nothing we can do for ourselves. It could be, in fact, that sometimes God allows- dare we think that he causes- us to be in a bad place so that we will turn to him.
- Sometimes we need help to hear from God. (v. 11) No matter how holy you may be, no matter how close to God you are, no matter how much time you spend in prayer, sometimes you need someone to guide you. You need a prophet, a pastor, a prayer partner, a spiritual mentor, who can help you see the truth in your life and the plan that God has for you.
- Sometimes we need to worship to hear from God. (v. 15) It makes no sense to the human reason (at least not to mine) that God responds to our worship. When we sing praises, when we offer our lives, our selves and our love he hears us. And when he hears us he speaks to us. Worship puts us in a position to hear from God, and gives God the initiative to work in us.
